Hello Neighbor!
What’s on the Ballot TUESDAY, Nov 7?
— Prepared by Terrence Nash
Jackson County Question #1 — Shall Jackson County impose a local use tax for the purpose of financing road and bridge construction projects within the County, including projects within the corporate limits of cities within the County, for financial assistance to homeless persons and persons at risk of becoming homeless, and for renovations and repairs to the Jackson County Courthouse in downtown Kansas City and the Eastern Jackson County Courthouse and Historic Truman Courthouse in Independence, at the same rate as the total local sales tax rate, provided that, if the local sales tax rate is reduced or raised by voter approval, the local use tax rate shall also be reduced or raised by the same action?
Our comments: This is a NEW USE TAX purportedly to fight homelessness, do road repairs, etc. It’s actually a sales tax on business out-of-county vendor purchases. When business taxes are increased they just increase the cost to the consumer. — But government needs to learn to live within its means. NO MORE TAXES! The County doesn’t deserve a windfall. They should be reducing taxes if one tax is increased. Can you afford higher prices? Do you trust County Executive Frank White and the legislature to manage and spend more tax dollars wisely? VOTE NO.
Kansas City Question #1 — (Public Bus Transit System) SHALL THE FOLLOWING BE APPROVED? Shall the City of Kansas City continue a city sales tax for the purpose of developing, operating, maintaining, equipping and improving a public bus transit system for Kansas City, pursuant to contract with the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority, as authorized by Section 94.605 of the Revised Statutes of Missouri at a rate of 3/8% for a period of 10 years?
Our comments: NO MORE TAXES! This is for a renewal of a sales tax that was already renewed in 2007 and went into effect in 2008. Much has changed and the bus service has not been maintained or improved. The main change is the implementation of so-called free bus service. This allowed for the deterioration of safety on buses and the inability to be able to restrict criminals from just using buses and bus stops as opportunities for crime. The KCATA is now engaging in economic development schemes to the detriment of Kansas City policy on TIF’s. This money is a backdoor way to fund City, World Cup transportation needs which is a separate City initiative and should not be funded by diverting money from basic public bus transit. VOTE NO.
Please vote on Nov 7. These issues affect you!

Frank White Recall update
This is a bi-partisan effort. Many people in Jackson County are participating in collecting signatures of registered voters in Jackson County to force a recall of Frank White for the outrageous behavior of his office and the County Assessment Office. They are hurting people all over the county. Our county assessor, by the way, is the only one in the state who is not elected by the people. Our State Legislators need to fix this.
Call the county GOP HQ (816) 875-9690 to locate a petition to sign.
Kansas City Democrats mock Jefferson City Republicans
Once again, the Jefferson City super-majority Republicans are made to look like fools by the Kansas City Democrats. The Mayor of Kansas City got a one-time $50 million bailout from the State for the World Cup, after the Mayor promised that Kansas City would fund the World Cup. But the City just announced a $39 million Youth Entertainment District. This is while the City will not fund a new jail at cost of $26 million or fully fund the police department. The current total of 153 murders is ahead of the previous years total of 144. Crime is out of control in Kansas City. The priority should be public safety. (—by Terrence Nash)
Camden County and Greene County, Missouri Freezes Property Taxes for Seniors —
The State Legislature passed a law in the spring “allowing” counties to freeze property tax for seniors. Jackson County didn’t do it, but Camden & Greene counties did — good for them! READ MORE…
The Missouri State Board of Education moves ahead with plan to implement “social-emotional learning standards” for all Missouri students
These will affect K-12 students and will be an “essential part of the school day.” Missouri State Board of Education chair Charlie Shields said, “This is what has to happen for learning to take place.” All of it sound nice and rosy at the beginning, but these things
often come back to bite us. READ MORE ….

Aren’t we supposed to have a “representative” government? — meaning, that we send people to Jefferson City and Washington, D.C. who represent us and vote the way we want. The last 4 weeks we’ve seen some interesting developments in Washington. There was an outpouring of voter support for Jim Jordan but the congressmen and women refused to do what their voters wanted. After the names of the 22 who voted against him were released, thousands of people made phone calls and even protested in from of local offices. Ann Wagner from eastern Missouri stood against Jordan and finally, wisely, caved to her voters. But then, Congress decided to hold a secret ballot, wherein 100 voted against Jordan. But a miracle happened! They came together and selected a good conservative man to be the House Speaker. Let’s pray for Mike Johnson as he steps into this mess. (More about Johnson.)
We must ALWAYS be on guard against “non-representative” behavior from our elected officials. They can lie to us at election time, but their true colors are shown by how they vote. The Jackson County GOP Vetting Committee will be implementing a plan in the coming weeks to track the voting records of all our state politicians from Jackson County. We want you to know how they vote on bills that are important to you. If you want to check how our Missouri State Reps and Senators voted this last session, go to this link.
Some of our representatives don’t seem to care about what their constituents think or want! Not sure who some of them are trying please (hint: lobbyists, big donors maybe).
Right now, Republicans in Missouri support …
- School choice, like Iowa and Arkansas have. But no, our Republicans won’t do it. Both State Rep Jon Patterson and State Senator Mike Cierpiot say we “have to take baby steps.” In other words, it won’t happen anytime soon.
- Requiring food companies to list what additives, especially vaccines, they put in our food. Italy now requires that. Why not Missouri? It made it out of committee, but not to the floor.
- Stopping counties from property tax extortion. County officials should not be allowed to do what they’ve done here in Jackson County! Why didn’t our legislature fight for us? We all knew it was coming, but Frank White got elected anyway. Now we are hoping the State Auditor gets involved.
